Ecclee, B.A.M.C. Captain Eccles who was born in England, and who .qualified at Guy e Hospital, London, arrived in the Dominion in 1900, and started in practice at Mangomii. He held the .rank of captain of tile First Mangonui ■ .Mounted Rifles, subsequently attaining to the.rank of colonel of the,Nortli Auckland Kegmient Shortlv after the outbreak of war lie proceeded to England, where lie enlisted, and was immediately «P_P°">ted med cal instructor at one of the R-A-M.C- camps, and sent to France. On July 2o of this Tear he was promoted, mentioned in dieTO+ches, and transferred from the Artiste BMes to the-Irish. Rifles ,Captai* Eccles, who was well known and extremely popuInr in the Auckland province, served with distinction through the South African ■War, beins awarded the Queen's Medal with two clasps. He i« survived by Mrs. Eccles, who resides in Auckland. The Rev. W. Ready, who went away as chaplain on a hospital ship, has returned once more to Dunedm (says the "Star"). Mr. Heady, when he arrived in London, received the sad news of tno death of his youngest son, Gunner Gordon Ready, he being reported first as missing and then believed killed in action. Mr. Beady brought back his Eecond youngest son, Gunner W. Beady, who ■had seen three years' ser/rice in the war, and whoMiad to be operated upon in the trenches in France, and'is now invalided home. Mr. Ready's eldest son, Lieutenant Harofil Beady, is expecting-to tcke his departure for the scene of battle at an early date. Four of Mr. Ready's nephews are fighting in France, and three of them are in the Canadian Scottish. One has been wounded twice, anU is back again in the fighting line. Mr. "W. J. Scandrett, who wa 3 six times Mayor of Invercargill. • Air. Scundrett, who was-77 years of nge.Vas born in London, and arrived in Unnedm in 1858. Four years later he settled in Invercargill, v:here he has ever since ■had his home. Mr. Scandrett was Town Clerk of Invercargill from 1871' to 1593, when lie resigned to begin business on his own account. Ho served as a councillor, and in 1895 was first elected Mayor. He was an enthusiastic volunteer, was captain of the Invorcargill Rifle volun•teer Corps iu 18S0, and was promoted maior in 1885. He was a dirctor of several public companies, and was a prominent Oddfellow and Mason. Amongst the recent arrivals at the Columbia Hotel are Judge; and .-Mrs. Jones. Dr. Godhard, Captain Hentiah, and Mr. Baxter (America), Mr, and Miss Collingo (New Plymouth), and Mr. failmore.
