WATERSIDEKS V. WORKING MEN'S CLUB. The-annual shield watch between tho Watersnlers and •'Working Alen's Clubs was contested, in the ilaruour Board's X shed last Monday evening, and proved very enjoyable, there being a large gathering of enthusiasts. Betore play commenced, Air. Munro, the chief wharfinger, presented the six prizes won in the resent tourney of the Watersiders' Club-~ a full account of which appeared in our issue of Monday last. Ho then voiced the home team's wishes that both sides, would thoroughly enjoy the match tliey were about to engage in. The Water* siders were handicapped by the absence of Air. Leggatt, wlio was to have played, at the top board. Messrs. W. H. Smith and C. Alanson were notable, absentees from tho other side. . Playing with greater steadiness than usual the Working Jlen's Club's representatives got a. nose ahead in tho first hour's play, and when the match terminated in a happy reunion around, the refreshment tables the visitors were returned winners by a margin of eight games, a result that will doubtless benefit the iplayers of draughtSj in this city, seeing that all tho previous matches "have been won by tho Watersidcrs. Mr. E. Butlor formally handed over the challenge snieid, and complimented the winning side on ita good and improved stowing. (Applause.) Air. W, Featonby, as chairman for Clieos and Draughts in tho Working, Alen's Club, returned thanks on behalf of tho visitors for tho kind way they had been entertained. The Watorsiders had such a strong team that t'liey might hive no great difficulty in regaining the shield, but tho Working Alen's Club hoped to put up a great fight for'it. (Applause.) .It should be added that the fivo dual members all played for the .Working Alen's Club, a concession, that will, in turn, be granted to the Walersiders in connection with the chess match .that is being arranged between theso two clubs.
