RETURNED SOLDIERS' CLUB

WELLINGTON INSTITUTION'S SECOND ANNUAL REPORT.

The second annual report of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Club-house Society, to be presented to the members at the annual meeting, to .be held on September 27, states that the club has been freely used by returned soldiers, and haa fully justified its oiistence. It serves a public and useful purpose in encouraging returned soldiers to return to civil occupations. The balance-sheet shows that the' financial position of the club is sound but tho committee trusts that strong efforts will be made during the ensuing year to secure more financial support from the publio, in order that a. substantial capital sum may be raised, so as To remove any doubt as to ways and means" for some time to come. A strong effort should also be made to secure more airnual subscribers so as to provide the clu'o with an income suftcient to meet all outgoings, and thereby save the club from- entrenching on its capital. The total receipts from, all sources during the year amounted - to ,£4925 7s. lfld. The total expenditure on working account has been .£2475 18s. W-. and out of tho balance remaining tlio committee has placed -SIBOO on fixed deposit and .£497 2s. lOd. has been expended on furniture. Much of the expenditure was in respect of the initial equipment of the club premises, of a jon-rc-current nature. The committee had to take over a liability incurred during the previous year on account of the nrst lieturned Soldiers' Club, prior to the-in-corporation of this society, amountnlg to ,£528 3s. The discharge of this liability cost the committee a concern, but, at a critical stage - club's history, a donation 0f'.£414 laswas received from an anonymous donoi, which enabled the committee to pay off the whole of the old debts A special appeal was made to the punlie in December last, when processions were organised and a carnival was lieM at the Basin Reserve. The special appeal was strongly supported by the members of the Commercial Travellers' Uuo and a large. number of other willing workers, and resulted in aiietjiurpl,, 3 being received amounting to n j On April 23 lectures were B IT . eU by Sir James Carroll ,and.
