OVER 3000 PRISONERS ■ FURTHER ADVANCES ; MOTHER RUSSIAN CONSPIRACY HIGH OFFICIALS- INVOLVED Stirring accounts are given of the great battle in Elanders in which the British have so signally, demonstrated their superiority over the enemy. It ig claimed that in the test of this battle the enemy's new defensive methods have broken down. Even captured officers endorse this opinion. All arms are shown to have given a. noble account of themselves. Tho artillery is credited with a record performance, the infantry has gained new laurels, and superb work by the British airmen contributed very notably to the victory. New Zealand troops were not engaged in the battle, bu-t took an important part in the trying preliminary york j which made such a splendid success possible. All the ground won in the main attack on Thursday has been maintained, but the enemy has recovered a little of the ground occupied oil Friday; In however, ■the fate of his counter-attacks heavily accentuates his defeat. There is news of another kind from the Eastern theatre. The Russians have suffered a reverse on the Dwina front. The river ig still between the opposing forces in the area of the action, but tho Russians have lost the town of Jaoobstadt and an extensive bridgehead. It is reported- also, thi,t General Alexieff has come io-to conflict with the Government and resigned the position of Chief of Staff. Argentina has \sent an .ultimatum to Germany. ' -
