On Friday, September 21, a children s fancy dress ball, organised by Mrs. S. M'Pherb'on, was held • in the Gillandia Hall. Quite a number of children were in fancy dress, and all seemed to have a very me.ry time. At 10 o'clock the children were given supper and tho adults took the floor until 2 p.m., Mrs. Butler and the Messrs. Graham Bros, supplying the music. Mr. Freeman acted as M.C. The takings at tho . door were a little over ■£!>.' During the interval Mrs. Davy sang, Miss Marie 11 Pherson danced, and a party ot' local Maoris performed n, liaka und. a poi dance, I'Uo latter being especilly good. ; Mr. Murdock (Mnyor ot Shannon), who has been confined to his bed for the last two weeks, is convalescent. The local Maoris, assisted by those ot Otaki, are busy preparing for an enter-' taininenl; in aid of the Maori War liund, to be held hero next week. Last Monday evening Mrs. Abraham, from Palmerston, met our local patriotic workers to consult with about giving some assistance in connection with refreshment tents ftt the Palmerston show. There 'was a good representative meeting, and all present decided to do all in their power to help. i
