APPEALS AND EXEMPTIONS
JTUETHEB STATEMENT BY DEFENCE ■ MINISTER. "It is; not intended to provide any other ■. exemptions from military service than those now set forth in the original Statutes other than those which' Pariianient may provide for this session/' said Sir James Allen in answer to a question put by Mr. W. H. Field (Otaki). -I would again .point out that every ninu . . tailed up for service has the right of oppeal on the ground of either public interest or undue hardship, and every case is dealt with on ite merits. So far as '• " farmers are concerned,. the Military Ser« vice Boards have been advised that the •'■ ' Government regards the agricultural and pastoral industry as most essential, and lias recommended them to adjourn sine die the appeal of any farmer reservist unless'they are satisfied that he can be replaced by a man ineligible for military service, or that oth'er arrangements, t'fcil •be made for the supervision and managv- ' ment of his farm-during his absence. •Every effort is being made to disco Vβ 1 . , ■nieii who have failed to register in the ilixpeditionary Force Reserve, and to locate the balloted men whose cases are still undisposed of. Reports have been [received from time to time of men alleged to be living in the bush in varum parts of the Dominion for the purpose of escaping- their military responsibilities, but so far the police have been unable to find them."
