HARBOUR BOARD LANDS
SHOULD THEY PAY RATES? At question time Inst evening in the City Council, Councillor 1 L. M'Kcnzte asked what was, being done with regard to the acquisition of a piece of Harbour Board land adjoining the corporation yards at Clyde Quay. After stating that negotiations were proceeding, the Mayor stated that they were also going into the subject of the rates on Harbour Board lauds. They were pretty well agreed, lie thought, that tbose lands which the board intended to reserve for its own' purposes should not be 6ubjtict to'rates, but whero the lands we being held by the board-for speculative purposes" the council should hoin: ji position to collect rates. The City -Solicitor (Mr. O'Shea) was pursuing tho.mtter, and would present a report in due course, which the council would be given the opportunity to discuss. He quite admitted that there might be something to be said upon the, other side, but they wanted to see what powers they had in such oases. -
