AN ELECTION THIS YEAR?
. » . ,MR. PAYNE'S REQUISITION. A demand for an election at the end of this year has been made by sev.a-al members in the House this session, but it has been said by some of their uncharitable ■fellow-members, that (hey would bo very sorry men if they got what they ask. Mr. Massey's reply on at least two occasions nas been, "Bring mo a requisition for an election signed by a majority of members of tho House, and I will do my best to let you havo an election." Mr. Payne has taken up the challenge. He has prepaxod a requisition, and he was canvassing for signatures yesterday.- Ho stated in tho Houso last evening that he had obtained only ten signatures. Most members treat tho matter as a joke. . . At the time of the rising of tho Houso the number of signatures to Mr. Payne's requisition had. risen to 15. They were as follow :-Messrs. Payne, Sykes, I'lotchsr, T A. H. Field, Glover, Young, Hornsby, Jl'Combs, Brown, VoUch, Statham, V. itty. Walker, Webb, and Dr. Thacker.
