The Tarawera will receive cargo until 2 p.m. to-day for Lyttelton and Dunedin, and will sail at 5 p.m. From Dunedin the vessel will sail for Lyttelton and Auckland. CONCRETE VESSELS. A few days ago a cable message from Ohristiania announced that the first cf the-concrete sea-going vessels whioh are being' built in Norway had been launched. It is a "vessel of 200 tons, and its construction to tho 6tage when it took the water occupied three weeks. A group of San Francisco capitalists (says the New York "Engineering News" of .Tune 21), have combined to finance' a £40,000 venture lor tryin;: out a scheme for constructing oceangoing vessels of concrete. The plan has been developed by Alan M'Donald, of M'Donald and Xahn, construction engineers, of San Francisco, who will supervise the construction of the experimental vessel. Work Is to start at onco in a shipyard laid out for this purpose on San Francisco Bay, tear Redwood City. The concrete vessel v ill bo about 300 ft, lung, with a cargo capacity of 4500 tons. Tho shell of the hull is to be about 6in. thick, made of the beat concrete it is possible to mix, relnforcod with steel rods welded together. Tho weight of the bull is to ho less than the weight of a wooden hull for tho same cargo capacity. In fact, it was a comparison of the weight and tho efficiencies of joints in wooden vessels and in reinforced concrete structures that first drew attention to the use of concrete in ship construction and resulted in the development of the scheme now being tried out. A study of modern wooden shipyard methods developed the faot that the weight of bolts used in '.he usual wooden vessel is more than the weight of reinforcing called for under the scheme proposed by Mr. M'Donald. About 90 days will be required to build the first vessel. If the scheme Is found to be successful, it is pointed out, any number of boats could be built without dependence upon eastern steel mills; and at the rate of f:nlv 30 to 60 days' actual construction time on each hull, a large' yard could turn out ships at an unprecedented rate.

The scow Magic will sail on Friday for Snudy Bay to load dtono for this port. \ Tho Komata will sail to-day l'or port to load for "Wellington. The Kamona is to sail to«day for Napier with a part cargo of coal. From Napier the vessel will go to Westport to load for Wellington.

The (Jniou Company's Rosamond is duo to-morrow from Timaru. She will sail on Friday for Westport and Qreymoutb. There is no foundation iu fact for the statements recently made as to there being an obstruction in the channel at tho Wanganui bar. On Saturday last, the whole length of the channel was very carefully dragged in the most effective manner possible, with the result that no sten of any obstacle could be discovered. The Gisborno Shecpfarmers' Company has decided to rename their new tug Tiroa, as there is already a vessel named Torea.

News received from Cape Town, South Africa, under date of June 25, ?tates that compulsory pilotage went into oflcct from July 1 in Table Bay and Kyn6aa harbours. Mr. G. T. Crawley, purser of the Mararoa, is going to Dunedin for orders, and Mr. W. M'Grath, late of tfie Pateena, will relieve him.
