LABOUR AND STATE CONTROL
-o THE WELLINGTON COMMITTEE. Mr. W. Maddison, as president of the' Wellington Labour Representation Committee, challenges the accuracy of :i paragraph published on Friday in reference to a meeting of the- committee last week, 'at which tho question of State control of tho liquor traffic was raised. Mr, Maddison states that there was no formal discussion on this point. Somo delegates, ho adds, objected, in the course of an informal discussion, to the inclusion of the following plank in tho Labour Party's platform:— "That the question of Stato control bo placed on the ballot paper when the referendum is taken on the liquor question." "It is altogether incorrect," Mr. Maddison stated, "that the committee finally decided not to adopt tho platform. The position is, briefly, that since tho committee is affiliated with the. New Zealand Labour Party the platform of tho latter body automatically becomes that of tho committee. This could only be cancelled by cancelling the affiliation. Such aotion could not be taken by tho delegates of the Labour Representation Committee, but only, if at all, by the constituent bodies who elect these delegates."
