Po lack and Edith M. Fnrbash, respectively statistician and assistant statistician ot the committee. „ According to the article, a census of 571 oublic and private institutions slows that on January 1, 1917,. thero veyo in the United States 234,055-insane- patients. At the same time there were 37,220 cases Of feoblo Handedness. Of opiletptics torewere 10,801. Of inebriates and drug addicta thero wero 4891. ■ According to tho estimates of the federal Census Bureau, the population of the United States . increased from 91972,26«T0n April 15, 1910, to 102,826 309 on January 1, 1917/ an, increase of 11.80. ner cent. During the same period the ■ number of insane in institutions jnoreSed from 187,791 * to 23,55,.au increase Of 24.M per cent. The increase of insane in institutions was relatively "renter than that of the general population in every State except Arizona, Kansas, Mississippi, Nevada and South Carolina. „
