A Press Association-Reuter cablegram from London states that the Distinguish,ed Service Order has been awarded to Lieutenant-Commander Sanders, V.C.. of Jfew Zealand, who was reported killed in actiou on August U last.
Tho Mayor of Christchuich and Mrs. Holland are visiting Wellington to meet their son, Lieutenant S. J. Holland, who is returning, invalided.
Mr. P. W. Manton- foil over a steep bank on his property at Northland yesterday, and was so seriously injurixl that lie had to bo removed to the Brougham Street Private Hospital. Mr. Manton. received injuries to his head and hip, and was unconscious for threo hours. Sir Walter Davidson, Governor-elect of New South Wales, is a man of six i'eet, with a robust, military appearance (states a Press Association telegram from Newfoundland, where ho has been Governor). He is logical, but not a (luent speaker. He possesses a strong personality, and is a broad-minded Liberal imbued with democratic principles. -Nevertheless .he maintains a firm adherence to strict duty as a constitutional administrator. He is fervently Imperialistic and an advocate for the closest cementing of the bonds of unity between tho Mother Country and her Dominions. Sir AValter displays sound judgment in the diplomatic handling of contentious matter. He is u tireless worker. Since tho -war "no has circumnavigated the island, urging a response to the call to arms. He gained tho confidence, respect, and affection of the people more than any predecessor. An extension of his term would bo welcomed. The whole, country press eulogise,-: Si r Walter Davidson, who anticipates the filling of his new office with keen pleasure and pride. A memorial photograph of the late Mr. George Heron is (says our special correspondent) to bo unveiled in Masterton in .the course of a few days. Mr. I. Hart, of Messrs. Hart and Co., left for Auckland on Saturday. The death occurred in Christchurch on Friday of Mr. H. S. M'Causland, chief clerk for Messrs. Andrews and Beaven. The late Mr. M'Causland was a prominent member of tho Order of Druids, and in 190G occupied the rosition of Arch Druid. He leaves a widow, two sons, and two daughters. One of the sons is serving his country in Prance. On Saturday night the Commercial Travellers' Club tendered a "smoker to "Our Boys in Khaki" who are members of Wellington and kindred associations. There was a good attendance, and an excellent programme was provided by tho newly-formed musical society, assisted by some of the leading artists in the city. Tho Savage Club Orchestra, with Mr. Elliott as cornet soloist, contributed a few items, and M. Eugene Ossipoff had a most enthusiastic reception. Most en-, joyable songs and recitations were given by Messrs. Crawford, M'Kenzie, N. Aitken, and Arthur Allen, while Mr..H. 1. 'Wood received a double encore. Messrs. Thompson and M'Donald played a. duet for two flutes, and tho male voice choir rendered several items under the baton of Mr. Peek., During an interval light refreshments were served, and the health of "Our Guests," coupled with all the boys in khaki and blue, together with those who have returned, was proposed by the president, Mr. Manton, and drunk with musical honours. Friends of Mr. G. A. Tyer, of the firm of Messrs. Watkins, Tyer, and Tolau, will tie pleased to learn that l\e is recovering from the illness which has confined him to his home for several weeks, and that he has been able to journey to Eastbourne for a period of. rest and recuperation. Mr. J. H. Downes, assistant manager of the Thames Gasworks, has been appointed manager of the Rangiora Gasworks. Mr. C. J. Hamblin, of Tariki, has received a cable message stating that his eon,' Private J. E. Hamblin, who was reported wounded, is now reported missing. Of Mr, Hamblin's six sons who went to the front three have made the supremo sacrifice, ono is in hospital, one is now reported missing, and the other is still in the trenches.
