For Trench Comforts. The production, by Miss Campbell of the pantomimic play "The Magic Oarpet," in the Grand Opera House this evening, will probably surprise a great many people by the beautiful elects which have been secured in the various scenes of the play, particularly in regard to tho ballets, which are really beautiful both as to setting and to the dancing itself, which, as might be cxpected, is of a very finished order. Flowers have been largely called upon to supply ideas for these ballets, and among them are . the carnation, the orchid, and the tulip ballets,' the last-flamed, as may be imagined, being very gorgeous. Some of the scenes are remarkable for the beauty trivances which have been introduced, one of them being a ballet in tho air. Old friends of childhood have been called into service, and tho audience will of i the setting, and tho ingenious conrenow their'acquaintance with the Walrus, the March Hare, and the AVhito ltabbit, from "Alico .in Wonderland." The dressing is exceedingly effective, and the music throughout the play is charming. Altogether "The Magic Carpet" is not by any njeans a production to be missed. How the strike in Sydney affected the work of supplying comforts kr the men on active service is shown in the toiiowing paragraph from the "Australasian, August 25-.-"E<:erything p.-stpoi-ulo has been postponed this week, and nearly «" the patriotic depots and ctoiforls tnnils aro closed until the strike is oyc-r.,}\ hen things become normal again yt *ul ™ necessary to work very hard if cur men at the front are not to suffer, winch is. a possibility women cannot ondnre 10 think of."
Even a big strike has its compensations, and 6ome of our romantic little "flappers" will be quite sorry when it is over (states a writer in the "Australasian.")- Many of the amateur tram conductors were so interesting, and had "suck distinguished manners! Jimbryo professors or doctors at least they, must Lave been, with their athletic figures, manicured hands, and chatty dispositions. Such elegant phrases as "if you please, madam ,r and "Oh, thank you. ever eo much" made even the paying of the extra, halfpenny on the fare a romantic episode. . Mrs. George Rhodes has returned to Christchurch from Wellington.
