INTERESTING TO SHEEPBREEDERS
FLOCK EWE CHAMPIONSHIP. 'J'ho Wanganui Agricultural Association has adopted rather a good scheme to encourage an improvement , in the breed of eheep, namely, to hold a (lock ewe championship. It was suggested that exhibitors should show 20 sheep, the object being- that farmers in the bat-k----block s: could got 20 ewes at a reasonable figure, good enough to Weed rams from. It would, it is contended, also encourage farmers to breed to a type and lmprovp the breed •of eheep along . the West ! Coast.'" With a view to : ascertaining what assistance would bo forthcoming in the shape of finance, the president interviewed certain members, with the result that'ten guaranteed prizes amounting to .£IOO for the competition. When the matter was before the asso. ciation, Mr. Russell said objections that might be raised were that Lincoln would favour Lincoln sheep and otner .judges other breeds, but it could be arranged for the Lincoln, Eomney, and Leicester judges to judge the competition. ~,. Mr.' Cummins said the competition op. pealed very much to him, as it would enable back-country settlers to attend; the show and pick up a nucleus, of a flock. , . , After some discussion, the proposal waa adopted, exhibits to consist <f 20 ewes in the wool, and any breed to be eligible. The scheme adopted is to otter .£SO as the first prize, and then prizes of .825, £15, and .£lO in that order.
