TRAM ACCIDENT. A. feiv minutes after (> o'clock last evening a mail was knocked down by n. tramcar on Lambton Quay near the Union Bank. The tram car, which was being driven by Motonnan Joseph Turnbull, was bound for Inland Bay, and when near the bank' a man was seen to step off the footpath, and before the ear oould be pulled up he was struck by the front stanchion on the near side. T>r. Pollen was quickly in attendance, and ordered Hid injured man to be taken tn the Hospital. The police wore unable to ascertain his name, but later in the evening ho was identified fit tho Hospital by a friend, who said the mail's namo was Frederick Kutliberg. lie received injuries to his head, but it is not believed that they are t-ovious. A SOLDIER DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gore, September 11. A drowning accident occurred in the Mataura River, Gore, shortly sfter 6 o'clock last night. Frederick Wallace, aged 20, accompanied by Joseph Murray, both on final leave from camp, wcro crossing the traffic bridge, when Wallace's hat was blown into the river. Wallace proceeded down the gravel beach to intercept it. He waded in, was swept o(T his feet, and carried down the river before assistance could bo Tendered. The river is being dragged for the body.
