POLICE OASES. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Oourt on Saturday. Joshua Ede charged that on September 5. at Wellington, he did steal three bags of sugar, valued at £2 8s„ the property of the Wellington Harbour Board was ou tho application of Mr. H. P. Accuscd pleaded not 'guilty, and was defended by Mr. P. W. Jackson. The accused, who admitted iho was very drunk/assaulted an elderly man najueH John Guhbins, in Adelaido Koad. Accord- . ing to tho dcfcnco the incident started in a hotel, and after dubbins and his friend left the'hotel accused, eanw out with. hi 3 brother and knocked G-wbtu-ns down. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for accused. Corriok pleaded guilty to tho ilrst chargo and not guilty to tho second. After .hearing Llio evidence, tho accuscd was convicted and fined S>% tho alternative being two months' imprisonment, and on tlia first charge ho wag ordered to come ■up for sentence when called upon. Axel Martin Person, for whom Mi". IT. H. Cornish appeared, )was further remanded to Wednesday on va- charge of sle-aling good? of tho total value of £7 lis. 4d., tho property of Collins Brothers andi-00., Ltd., manufacturing stationers.

For insobriety, Miohael Bownoy was fined 20fj., in default, 48 hours' imprisonment, and one first, offender was fined 10s'., in tho aJterriative 24 hours' imprisonment.
