MANAffATU BEAT WELLINGTON
A BRILLIANT GAME
One of the finest games of girls* hockey witnessed here was played on the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon, vhen Ifanawatu and Wellington mot. The gama was fast and exciting throughout, and at times tho play, particularly that of was brilliant. Manawatu wore the better team, but for a time it looked as • though" tho ill-luck which robbed them of victory over Canterbury was going to pursue them. However, the visitors did not lose, and their win ivas full of merit. ./ Tho other tournament game played during the' afternoon ,was between Wairarapa and Canterbury, and tho result was an easy win fqr the Sonth Island eleven. Canterbury Defeat Wairarapa. The Canterbury-Wairarapa fixture was played first. Shortly after the game commenced Miss M. Fearce scored twice for Canterbury, and before the end of thespe 11 Missos G. Burr, V. Jtossifer, and M. Pearce added gaols for the lied and Blacks. Miss Nis scored fov Wairarapa in tho first'spell, and halt-time found the 6coro standing: Canterbury, 5; I CVairarapa, 1. In the second epell, Miss M. Pearce scored twice and Miss E. Kitchie once for Canterbury, and the game ended in favour of Canterbury by 8 goals to ono. Tflore was a fair crowd present by the time Wellington and Manawatu took the field, and the game was followed with considerable enthusiasm. Manawatu v. Wellington. The attack was opened by Manawatu, and early thoy had a shot at the Wellington goal. Tho attempt was made by Miss Kerslake, and only a fino save by the Wellington keeper prevented the ball from finding tho net. Another shot shortly afterwards looked like going through, but it also was saved. second shot by Miss was nicely stopped by Miss Skinner. East, open play followed. Tho Manawatu attack lifted, and Wellington took tho offensive. Manawatu, however, returned to tho attack, and from a scramblo in tho circle, Miss Kereel goaled. Manawatu, 1; Wellington, 0. This was tho state of the game at half-time. • At the beginning of the socond spoil Manawatu again attacked, but Wellington, rallied, and shifted operations to the Manawatu theatre. Play ■eniained' in the vicinity of tho Manawatu goal a while, and then a good centre shotwas beautifully picked up by Miss Lang, who drove the ball past the keeper into the net. Wellington, 1; Manawatu, 1. Very fast piny followed, with Wellington making vigorous efforts to keep tho ball in the visitors' territory. T.-ne they did for eome time, and their slots at the goal -were numerous. Some of tHo shots were a little wide, but cthors wero saved only by the good work of tho Manawatu keeper. After weathering the storm of a -well-sustained Wellington attack, Manawatu broke away, and, using their excellent combination, got to the Wellington circle. Miss Green passed to Miss Kerslake, who sent on to Miss Collingwood, and the last-named scored. Manawatu, 2; "Wellington, 1. AVellington soon renowed their attack, but again their efforts were frustrated, and toward the end of the game tho city eleven were relaxing- somewhat. Manawatu seized the- chance, and their forwards set up an irresistible attack, from which Miss Walley scored. Once again Wellington returned to lenew. tho ftg-ht, and this time Miss Williams scored. Manawatu. 3; Wellington, 2. Manawatu, with their superior combination, were wearing Wellington down, and. in the closing stages Mie3 Iversel added tho Greens' fourth Roal. The final score was: Manawatu, i; Wellington, 2.
