Mr. Arthur Amies, who is to succeed Mr. E. W. Lowe as manager in New Zealand for the A.M.P. Society, is expected lo arrive- in Wellington next week. Mr. Amies was formerly the society's chief accountant in New Zealand.
A Press Association cablegram from London states that Lieutenant Kstcold Kempthorno, of the Field Artillery, eon of Archdeacon Kempthorne, Brightwater, New Zealand, has been killel in action.
'Advice has been received in Auckland by friends of lieutenant It. E. Cooper, of the Royal Garrison Artillery, that he has been promoted to tho rank ot adjutant of a heavy artillery group in jlranco. Lieutenant Cooper is an Auckland boy who had training in the College Rifles there, and went to England nearly two years apo to join the Imperial Forces. Ho obtained his commission in England, and went to France as a enb-lioutenant with tho Royal Gamson Artillery, his subsequent promotions having beeu made on tho field of service.
Gunner Albert Marshall, news of whose death in action is published this morning, is the second son of Mr. and-Mrs. I' J. Marshall, of Maarama Crescent, who has fallen in the war, Gunner Fred Marshall having been killed in action last year. The two boys enlisted together, and left with the Eighth Reinforcements. Gunner Bert Marshall was only 21 years of ago. He weut through the great Somme Battle, and was also at Mcssines and La Bassee Ville. when his battery was taken out of the line for a rest anil to refit. Shortly after, ho left for England on furlougn, and he had only just returned to the firing-jme when he was killed. ,The late Gunner Marshall was a keen athlete, and was particularly well known in Association football circles. Before enlisting _he was on the staff of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association.
Mr F. R. Hcot, of the firm of Bray Bros was on Wednesday last presented by the staff with a Doulton ware teaset, as a mark of esteem on the occasion of Ms approaching marriage.
Mr Tom Pollard arrived from tho south' yesterday for the purpose of directin" the final rehearsals of 'La Mascotte" for the "Wellington Amateur Operatic Society. The season commences on Saturday, September 22.
Mr George Pearson, formerly on the literary staff of tho "Timaru Herald, •who left for the war eighteen months ago and joined the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders as a private, has now attained the rank, of lieutenant.
