PLUNKET BABIES' HOSTEL
PROPERTY ON CASHMERE HILLS TO BE PURCHASED. By Telegraph—l'rcss Association. Ghristchurch, Septembor B It has been decided by the committee of the Phmkot Babies' Hostel to purchaso tho Cashmoro Hills property and residence owned by tho trustees of the Into Colonel Richardson, and now occupied by Mr. G. T. Booth. About itO.OOO has been raised Teeently by public subscription for tho establishment of this hospital. The property was inspected by the Hon. R. W. Russell, Minister of Public Health, who is understood to have given his unqualified approval to the proposnl for its acquisition. Dr. Trtiby King also stated that he cordially approved of the purchase.
Mr. A. Macpherson, "Fields Supervisor, is firmly of opinion that tho best way for farmers to increase their livo stock productiion is to grow lucerne. This "king of fodder plants" is remarkably easy jrf cultivation, grows , well on comparatively poor soils; and yields an enormous bulk of fodder without the aid of ■fertilisers. Wherever grown ou com-mon-senso lines, Income has proved a success, and Mr. Macpherson intends demonstrating its va.lue this year to farmers throughout the whole of North and Central Canterbury.
A market gardener told the Hampton tribunal that he had "scrapped" .CGOO worth of chrysanthemums in order to grow .£SO worth of potatoes.
