WELLINGTON GAS
POOR QUALITY ALLEGED PRIME MINISTER PROMISES INQUIRY ' The quality of the gas supplied in Wellington was mentioned in-the Houso of Repregentatives yesterday by Mr. R. Fletcher, who said that tho Government should take steps to fix a standard quality of gas lor New Zealand. Tho gas supplied in Wellington at the present time was absolutely foul. He had been unable to read liis' newspaper on Saturday uiglt.' Working people were special sufferers under present conditions. He suggested that the Government should .employ a competent gas expert to investigate the whole question and fix a standard for tho Dominion.
Mr. Massey: Can you suggest one? Mr. Fletcher: You can find one if you look for him. There are stacks of them about.
Mr. Massey: "Not outside this House, 1 am afraid." The Prime Minister added that ho -had noticed complaints regarding the quality of the' gas. He was not quite sure what he could do in tho matter, but would consult with his officers and see if it was possible to bring about an improvement. ProbaHy no measures would bo taken without legislation. Ho had been informed that the Minister ot Internal Affairs had referred the matte)' to Dr. M'Laurin, Govercnment Analyst, but the report was not yet forthcoming. Mr. J. Payne (Grey, Lynn) ' said tho Government could secure the < services of- an expert in Napier. Mr. Massey replied that he would consult with the Minister of Internal Affairs.
