POLICE AND. MAINTENANCE CASES. Mr. L. G. Eeid. S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yestorday. . William Ellam, for whom Mr. 11. IL. Corpish appeared, pleaded not guilty to tno charge that while travelling in a railway carriage between Koputaroa and Levin, he did assault Peter Mouat bo as to cause liim bodily harm. Inspector Marsaclt stated that Mouat was in hospital sutterinff from a broken leg, and he was therefore obliged to ask for a remand for a week, which was granted. Bail was allowed in £25 and one surety of £25. For insobriety William Gordon was fined 20s„ in default Seven days' imprisonment. Six first o(lenders were leniently dealt with. Maintenance cases were dealt with as, follow :-Thomas Lano Martin was ordered to pay £5 within seven days, and £5 each calendar month thereafter, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. . Claude Watson was ordered to pay £2 9s. within one mouth, with the option of three days' imprisonment.. Albert Berry was ordered to pay £2 2s. fid. within seven days, in tlio alternative threo days' imprisonment. Proceedings were taken against Samuel Wilkinson by his wife for maintenance of herself and children, and an order was mado for 355; per week to bo pfiid her.
