Mr. .Tames M. Ferguson,. formerly of the Advances to Settlers Department, who more recently ■ was. tho owner of a big poultry farm ,at tlie Upper Hutt, died at his residence, No. 1 Caroline Street, on Saturday night. The late 15r. • Ferguson, who leaves a widow, was 4S years of ago. . ,
la the ballot list issued, yesterday appeared the name of the Into Lieutenant Bendix Hallonstein do Beer, warehouseman, Dunedin, who, we tiro iuformod, was killed in Prance about two months ago. The late Lieutenant do Seer was attached to a. heavy battery, and was a son of Mr. I. S. do Beer, a director of the D.I.C.
The death was announced; in a Press Association message from Dunedin yesterday of Captain Robert Strang 1 , for many years Marine Superintendent at Wellington, and afterwards at Dunedin, for the Union Steam Ship Company, " td. The late Captain Strang first came to tho Dominion as master of Yimous "crack" clipper ships. Shortly afterwards he entered the -employ, of the Union Company, and after nnving command of several of the company's vessels, was sent Home to bring out a new steamer for the New Zealand trade.* He was subsequently appointed Marino Superintendent in Wellington for the Union Company, a position he occupied for many years. During his stay in Wellington Captain Strang made mauy friends, and won the Tespect of all whom lib came in contact with. When tho post of Marine Superintendent at Dunedin fell vacant, Captain Strang was given tho position, which ho .filled until lie retired on superannuation, about four or five years ago. He was succeeded by Captain Colin Macdonnld. After his retirement, Captain Strang went on . a longthy visit to the Old Country. Whilst ho was staying in Wellington tho late Captain Strang was an elder in the Kent Terrace Church. Ho was tho first secretary of the Now Zealand Shipmasters' .Association, formed during the big maritime strike. He was/ twice married, and is survived by his second wife. As a mark- of respect to, the memory of the late Captain Strang, flags were down at half-mast yesterday on tho Union Company's building, and also on tlip various •vessels of the company in port. A painfully sudden death occurred at St. Paul's Methodist Church, Palmerston North, says a Press Association telegram. Mr. John Barnett, aged 73, a well-known farmer at I/eeston, -Canterbury, had walked to sorvice, and soon after he loo'.; Ms s«at lie suddenly exnired. He had suffered from heart trouble, but recently had been in good health. He was Visiting tho Pn.itnerston North district with his wife. His son, Dr. Barnett. of Palmerston North, is on active scrvice. ' The death is announced of Mr. Samuel Penrn, a very old resident of .Taranaki. He served during the Maori war, and was in the suppression of the, rebellion that followed the massacre of the Rev. John Whiteley at White Cliffs. A Crimean vetornn has just died at Kmnnra Hospital, aged 84 years, inamely, Orderly-Sergeant M. L. B. Nelly. Deceased had been , a resident of Kuniava for many years, and held medals for the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and the Maori War. An old colonist, Mr. Edmund Archer, died at his residence, Ponsonby, on Thursday, at the ago of 81. Mr. Archer arrived in Auckland in 1862 in the ship William Miles. Owing to the nativo rising ho abandoned his intention of coing to the country, and stayed. in the city, in order to assist the military authorities. For his services during the Maori War Mr. Archer was nwnrded the New Zealand War Medal. For many years he followed the occupation of n bookbinder, but owing to ill-health had to give up active work oboiit is ve.irs ano. Mr. Archer is survived by Archer, four sons, Hour daughters and eight grandchildren. Mr. J. Prendeville, who will shortly hike up nn appointment in the Crown f,aiv Office, Wellington, lias been presented by the staff of the Nlretnlnina Borough Council with a silver-mounted cigarette caso. and a silver-mounted poc-kel-book.
Tho Education Board has appointed Mr. J, W. Butler as attendance officer, in succession to Mr. J. Dineon. Mr. Butler has sorve<l 011 several school committees, • and wont to Samoa with tho Medical Corps, remaining with tho force until rendered unfit by an accident. Of late he has been temporarily, employed in a Government Department. There woro 71 applicants for tho position. ,Mr. W. Crichton, Smith, in. charge of the Bill Office in Parliament Buildings, into hns recently undergone treatmftnt in a private hospital, has rocovered sufficiently to bo able to resumo liis duties. Lieutenant J.' Brown is returning to New Zealand this month, and not in December, as previously stated. Captain E. Vino, who has been linwedl for some weeks, lias gone to Kotorua for treatment. Mr. C. S. Makeham. of Brooklyn, has received notification that his son, Lieutenant Charles E. Makeham, is returning: to New Zealand on duty. Lieutenant Makeham left New Zealand two years ago as a sergeant in the Rifle Brigade, and eaw several months' active service in Egypt against tho Sennssi'lanfl other tribesmen before proceeding to France. He went through the Battto of the Sommo in September _lnst unhurt, but was wounded immediately afterwards by shell-fire. Subsequently he was selected to go into training as a military cadot, and for several mcnths pursued his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, where ho obtained his commission.
