Mr. S, E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided at tho [ Magistrate's Court, on Saturday. ; A sentence of t/iiree months imprison- : ffiout was, imposed on William Dolan, who' ! pleaded guilty to the theft of a quantity of tobacco valued at £6 9s. 9(1., tho property of Josoph Nathan and Co., Ltd. The was taken from Messrs. Nathan and Co.'s delivery cart while % the' attention of-the driver was otherwise engaged. Axel Martin Person, a Swede, aged 19, was charged that on different dates he did steal a quantity of goods, including mathematical instruments, ink, hair brushes, cards.•.■arid dictionaries valued at £7' lis. 4d., the property of Collins Bros, and Co. Mr. H. H. Cornish, who .appeared for accused, said that the lad recently came from Sweden,, and brought £200 with him. Ho bought some of tho goods which appear in the chargo sheet in Auckland; Ho admitted taking tho books. This the Magistrate took as a plea of not guilty, and on tho application of Chief Detectivc Boddam a remand was granted until SaturSeptember 8, bail being allowed in £100 and two sureties of £50 each, tho latter to be.'approved- by the Magistrate. For insobriety, William Waters, against' whom there wero several previous convictions, was fined £5, in default fourteen' days imprisonment; John Samuel Woodhouse was fined £2, with the option of serving 'seven days ; in ghol, and two first offenders were fined 20d each, in default 48 hours imprisonment.
