THE WAR LOAN
Sir,—Sir Joseph Ward has matin some vory eloquent appeals to the general public oil behalf of the War Loan; but he has not given us many examples of big subscriptions. Now, "Example is bettor than precept/' and the Chancellor of tile Exchequer in England sjrt.l tlio Finance Minister of the Commonwealth also have made a practice of puWishing Ihe good subscriptions. Why has Sir Joseph Ward not followed these good examples? The publication of good subscriptions would no doubt encourage those who have not yet subscribed. "When the lists come out we shall no doubt be surprised to see what good subscriptions hare been given by those that we thought could not.afford it, while a goon many names that we expected to see will be missing.—I am, etc., A SMALL SUBSCRIBER. Sir,—lt is with pleasure I notice that the Wellington Racing Club are investing .£IO,OOO of their funds in the War Loan. As this is a public institution, no doubt the amount will bo handed to the Treasury free of brokerage, thereby increasing the benefit of the loan to the State.—l am, etc., ]?. W. MANTON.
