MAKING SHIPS TOKPEDO-PHOOF. l'rofe=sor Biles has slated that it would be possible to make a ship torpedo proof if it carried 4iti. armour under water. A correspondent, writing to the "Engineer." flion&un), takes as all example a steamer 415 ft. long. With a beam of 40ft. 9in., and a mean draught of 25ft. 6in. lie calculates the displacement, at 10,200 tons, and (lie deadweight capacity at 6500 tons. The ' weight of the armour lie puts down at 1300 tons; so that fitted with it the carryill" capacity of the steamer would he red need to about 65 per cent , normal. As a ,'ooimcrcial nroposition lie admits that armouring would not be"sound, but in the exceptional circumstances he thinks it might he justified.. The suggestion of armouring commercial vessels is interesting hut. still more interesting is the stateincut. of Professor Biles that ships—he wns referring to warships—could be rendered invulnerable, to torpedo explosion by mi-der-water armour. If this had not. ben 'practicable, the professor-one or the 'greatest authorities on naval construction—would never have made the statement. 51 BSS-TAHLR GOSSIP. Mr. A. Patterson, chief engineer of the Waipori. has come ashore, and M» place has been taken by Mr. F. .1. liilson. Mr .1. Owens, first mate of the Blenheim. has resumed duty after his slight indisposition. Jtr. E. G. Morris, radio operator of the. Mararoa. and Mr. J. (1. Tli?gins, operator nf another steamer, haTe exchanged positions.
