MEAT PRICES
REDUCTION AGREED UPON IN CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, August 30. An agreement has been reached between the Board of Trade and tho master butchers of Christchurch in regard to the mictf of meat. ' The new agreement, whitfn was arrived at after considerable negotiations between the parties, will come into operation on September 8, and will continue in operation t_ill December 81. It is estimated that tue reduction on existing retail prices Is equivalent to per pound. Calculated on a; population of 80,000 it will effect a reduction to the meat consumers in Christchurch of .£60,000 per year. ilr. Sl'Donald, acting-chairman of the Board of Trade, said it was not proposed immediately to Gazette the prices, although chat would be done if it was 'found that any of tho butchers were not respecting tli'e agreement.' The prices fixed were not quite as- low as those obtaining at tho Government shop at "Auckland. The prices wore based upon 475. or 4Ss. per cwt/ wholesale, although as much as GOs. had been paid at recent markets. In the event of tho whole-' sale market being considered too high to enable the butchers to sell at these rates, they would be able to obtain supplies from tho Imperial stores, in which event prices will havo to -be again considered. ■.
