WORKERS' LOANS
AND THE SPECULATION ALLEGED,
"Government Workers' Loan, ,£350."— This tag on. eo many of the advertisements regularly appearing in which new houses are offered for eale has apparently escaped the notice of the gontlemen who supply official information to the Minister of Finance. In tho House of Representatives, Mr. Parr asked the Minister of Finance, Whether ho is aware that the practice is growing of persons obtaining loans from the Advances to Workers' Office for the erection of dwellinghouses, and instead of living in such houses, of subsequently lettinj; theso houses for rent and profit; and, if so, will he amend the Act so as to prevent abuse? Sir Joseph Ward (Minis Tor of Finance) replied: 1 am not nwaro' that tho practice complained of exfefo. Every precaution is taken to prevent speculation, and a statutory declaration is obtained from every' applicant to the olTcct that ho will permanently reside on tlio premises mortgaged. Under certain circumstances, sucli°as the removal of a worker to another district, it hns been found necessary to let tho premises, lmt in all cases the consont of the Department has been first sought .and obtained. An amendment of tho Act is not necessary.
