INTER-ALLIED LABOUR CONFERENCE .
BRITISH DELEGATION SWAMPED BY
SOCIALISTS
AMAZING PACIFIST PROPOSALS
(Rec. August 28, 7!20 p.m.)
London, August 28. : : The Inter-Allied Labour Conference at i Westminster to-day and to-morrow is "I arousing interest. It is a noteworthy ' : fact that the British Socialist Party and '■; Independent Labour Party will bo repre- i sented by delegations out of all proporr j tion to theii; numbers. The influence .' and comparative weakness of tho So-. ' cialisls is ivoll known in Britain, but the Continental Socialists consider that ' the Socialists are'representative of Lab- ; oiiii , opinion in Britain, believing , that thq majority of tho Labour Party are ; reactionaries controlled by the Government. Henco there is a possibility, that ■ > the French, Belgian, Italian, and Bus- ■ sian delegates will be mystified and mis- : led. Some of the pacifist proposals are • of" an amazing character. Thus: Four amendments propose that the future of j Alsace- and Lorraine should be decided ! by a referendum of the people of the ■ ■ j two provinces, on the ground that liei- ! ther Germany nor France ' has a right i to decide tho question.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable i Assn. .-...-.. j The British Socialist Party amendment -1 adds that tho peoples of India, Egypt, j Ireland, and Algiers should also be free I to decide their own cwrse. , A proposal relating to war indemnities ; says that there is a common Tesponaibil- ' ity for the war, and therefore the pro- ; posal to throw the cost of reparation on I ono Tower must be abandonsd. Kcpara> > tion must be from a common f'thdundw international control, while there must ! be recompense for loss and damage to ; property. Tho administrators rmst also j accord the working class an equal title ; to reparation. . , The pacifist proposals regarding the . j colonies say that ihe conference holds i that the peace of tho -world -will not bo j preserved if one Great Power is debarred . •. . from colonial rights. i Here is n curious episode: a memo- ] randuni was prepared for tho conference' | welcoming America's intervention on the ! uround that sho has united the Old and j New Worlds in defence of the democracy. i The Independent Labour delegates pro- j pose to delete these references to the . i United States. , ■ j The delegates include 5*T. Thomas ! (French Minister for Munitions), K. • ! Eenaudd (editor of the Paris journal ; "Humanitie"), M. Jean Looguet .(Karl ; Man's p-andson), M. van der Velds (Belgian), and M. 'Itoussanoff (a Eußsian i revolutionary eiile). . .. . ! The resolutions will be QBcuseed pri- j vatelv, only the voting being issued.- , I Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ' j GERMAN EFFORTS TO GET B&GttNS j TO STOCKHOLM ; PROPOSAL REJECTED. | (Eec. August 23, 11.45 p.m.) . ■ . i London, August 28. ' ' The Press Bureau reports that the Ger. ; _ j mans for a considerable time have tuged i the Belgian Socialists in Belgium to par- ''■ ticipate in the Stockholm Conference. The latter pointed out that that would j be impossible without a mandate from i the party at a ■meetinc at whicli free er- ' preseion of views would be allowed. XJlti- j mately the Germans consented to fflie \ meeting, •which declined, with two dis- | sentients, to attend the conference, eren i though British, French, and Italian dele- I gates should attend.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable \ Assn.-Keuter. ' :
