OVER ONE AND THREE-QUARTER MILLION REPORTED

APPEAL TO FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. There is a steady daily flow of subscriptions in connection with the War Loan. The total amount has now reached «i1,77G,000. There is a considerable demaad for tho forms by which Savings Bank depositors authorise the transfer from their accounts to the War Loan on September 1. This form saves Savings Bant depositors a great amount of trouble in connection with investing their money and epsuTes that they will lose no interest for the current montli on any money i\l)ich it is intended to invest in. War Loan bonds or scrip. A well-known settler in tho Dominion has applied for i! 20,000 tforth of inscribed etock. The Oamaru Harbour Board has decided to invest of its funds in tho War Loan. ■

As far as transactions through the Post. Office are concerned, investments in Past Office 5 -per cent, bonds amount to a larger sum than those in War Loan Certificates, inscribed rtock or TretusuTy War Bonds, showing clearly that tho small investor fully appreciates tho provision made by the Minister of Finance to meet his requirements.

Evidence is coming to hand from all parts of the Dominion that Sir Joseph Ward's letters have stirred local bodies, clf-rp'y and school teachers into eJTecHvs action, and his BeereUiry is deluged with replies of a most favourable, and enthusinstic nature. If good wishes and promises of support will make tha War Loan a success, it will certainly ,be a. very.marked one.

The following is a copy of a letter nddressed by the Right Hon. Sir Josenh Ward to the secretaries of all friendly societies: — i

"Pi;.—The Wnr Loan affords friendly sooieties an excellent ooportunity for investment of trust funds.

"The State security, the and prompt payment of interest, the facility for prompt liquidation in case of necessity, all tend to rnnke tho War Lonn Bonds a security which should be eagerly sought after, q7iit© aparfTrom any question of patriotism: and at this great crisis in the fnte of our Empire Tmtriotism should indeed be placed in the foreground.

'Tour socipty may havn funds awaitinjr investment. What better investment could bo found than ono which, while desirable from- a financial standpoint, will also help to provide the necessary food, clothing, and munitions for oqr brave Army at the front—those men who are sacrificing their lives that wo may be free from the thraldom of the most highly-organised tyranny the world ha.ever known? Shall we desert .them in their hour of need? Shall the lives already given be in vain? I hear you sav: 'A thousand times No!' "Yet to give them full-power to overcome the enemy all fto money we can raise is absolutely necessary. I feel suro your society will do its share in the great work, nnd invest much as possible in the War Loan.—Yours faithfully, (Signed) .T. G. WARD, . "Minister of Finance." THE COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS "A CREDITABLE CONTRIBUTION. As_ tho result of an active canvass within their own ranks, members of tho Commercial Travellers' Club had last evening secured subscriptions (o the I.ilierty Loan aggregating JCGI.OOO. This amount they confidently expect to increaso before the week is out lo ,£75,000. Tho wholo Bum will bo obtained from members of tho club, and will go Ktraight to tho Treasury freo of. all brokcrago or other charges. Those who have been active in tho matter are of opinion that if tho example of tho commercial travellers is followed by other bodies and institutions much will be done to promote the success of tho loan. Tho Kaiapoi Woollen Company is investing .£7500 in the War Loan, the ChristcluiTch Sinking Fund Commissioners .£■looo, the Tramway Sinkiins'liWl Commissioners JSOOO, and the LyUelton Borough Council .CKHll).—Press Ansn. A. Press Association message from Oamaru states that the Oamarn Harbour Hoard has decided to invest £IMO from the renewals and improvement reservo in War Loan Bonds. The Karori Borough Sinking Fund Commissioners have already "invested ,£)l6i- in .£lO War Certificates, and it is probablo that a further ,£l5O to £200 which has since accumulated will also be JnTceted in theso certificates,
