Hi Field asked the Minister of Industries and Commerce it t«e Board of Trade had inquired into the price of bacon, the retail price being Is. 3d. to Is. 6d. We shopkeepers in laranaki (wheie the pigs are grown) are charged Is. Id. for rolls (see per enclosed invoice), and sell at Is. 3d (You can pass the invoice along to Mr. \\.. it. Field if he desires it.) I have inquired from various farmers, and also my. brothers, nnd they assure me the best price they got last year-was sid., and usually only sd. per lb from the factories. Ihe present wholesale price of salt is. less than a penny per lb, so it shows a handsome profit to the factones-sd. they pay to the farmers and charge is. Id. to the retailers. Then again, we retailers have to take the marked weights; sometimes the rolls are a couple oi pounds short weight. That's our loss. If we don't care to take them from th? merchants or factories, we can return them. I trust the Board of Trade will go into every factory nnd examine the wages hooks, and find out where the cost comes in for them to charge Bd. per lb. for ° U f TMAKI STOREKEEPER.
