Returned Soldiers' Hostel at Newtown. The committee of tho "Returned Soldiers' Hostel, Newtown, acknowledges with thanks tho following donations-.—Hutt Patriotic Guild £A (monthly); Borbampore Branch W.N.R., per Mrs. Watt. JK 3s. Id.; British Empire Trading Co., tobacco; Newtown school children, flowers; Miss Price, ilowers; Mesdames Mountier, Jas. Taylor, and Glced (Berhampore), jams and chutney; Red Cross Society, undergarment.?, bandages, and lint; Bcirhamporo Branch W.N.H., cakes; Mrs. Charters, Lynll Bay, bovril (monthly). The Berhampore Broach of the W.N.K. again entertained tho returned soldiers at the hostel, in Newtown, on Monday night. Progressive euchre occupied the first part of the programme, accompanied by items excellently rendered by Misses Sparrow-, Sutton, and Tomliue, on their mandolines. Very nice articles had hceii provided for prizes, and were won bf ilrs. Philp and Messrs. Jaiuie and Bailey. Misses Tallin, Lucas, and Nieholls contributed vocal items, and Airs. M'Cartio and Mies M'Keon played tho various ■accompaniments and dance music for tho pleasant little dunce which followed a dainty suppor. Red Triangle Cake Room. The cako room recently staiied by the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A., in cheery premises above Littlejohn's jewellory establishment, in Lambtqn Quay, continues to do flourishing business each Wednesday from 10 a.m. onwards. Tomorrow tho loom will'be in charge of Mesdames Varney and Korsley and Miss Suiitii, who have succeeded in securing a satisfactory snpply of attractive wares. The conveners of the committee in charge of the whole enterprise, Mesdames Piper and Bray, express their thanks to all members of the Ladies Auxiliary and to the following other cc n'tributora:—Mesdames G. Tattle, Brittaii, G Hunter, Osborii. Dixon, Freeman, AWatson (Dannpvirke), Misses Tmvslake, Wilkinson, Mr. T. Gray, and several anonymous friends. All the proceeds from tho cake room are devoted to assisting the -war work of tho 1.A1.L-.A. "The Magic Carpet." The preliminary announcement of tho productiou of the musical pantomimic plav, "The Magic Carpet," by .Miss Gladvs Campbell, appears in this issue. Tlie "plav, which lends itseh to a. brilliant setting, will present many features new to Wellington. The original ' ICewpics' Ballet," with its catchy musical score, "We are Baby Kewpjos Dancing in the Dew," is sure to be well received. \nother brilliant scene, lending itself to vorv effective lighting, wilt be with. the "Spinners," who, with their illumined distaffs, weave magic thread round tho bad, naughty "Goblins." The Trench Comforts Funds Committee is lending its help, and will have charge ot tho salo of /flowers and 6weets on the first nieht. Another strong committee has been formed, of which Mrs. Ernest Hadfield is the honorary secretary, and this lady Mrs. Guy Powles, Mrs. Lindo Levin, Mrs.- W. Pen roc. Mrs. Sliund, and Mrs. Sinclair, are already hard at work in the interests of the production, and will take charge of the disposal of flowers and sweets on tho second night,' the Citizens' Service Leaguo undertaking tho duties on the third night. Red Cross Dance. An onjoyauio evening was spent on Saturday last, when some seventy-five peoplo attended a- Kcd Cross dance, held in tho Worser Bay Hall, and nrrnniwd by tho organising secretary, Miss Muriel Browne, and a. committeo of ladies. The hall was tastefully decorated, and tho floor in excellent condition. Several musical items were contributed by local , residents. The committee contemplates.holding another dance at an early date. A Punch and Judy Show is being looked forward to by tho little ones, and the takings are to go to tho local St. John Ambulance Overseas. A visit lo the New Zealand: Hospital at Walton-on-Thames was recently made by H.E.H. the Duko of Connaught (states a London correspondent). Col■nel T. Mill, N.Z.M.C., and his staff received the. visitor. and those present included Colonel Parkes and Miss Thurstou, who had travelled from London. The Duke was shown over Mount Felis: and the hutments, ami lie stopped at intervals io chat with the? patients. Ho displayed grout Lnteri'st in. tho work which is being done for., jaw .cases. Tho beauty of the hospital eurroumdinps charmed him, and ho remarked that such conditions should surely tend to help (lie sufferers to recovery. At Oatlands Park the Duke of Connaught was impressed with the revolving sheltere, of which there are now a number. Tho utilisation of hitherto unused patches of ground for the growing, of ve»otable3 did. not escape his attention. After' Beeing Oatlands tho party returned to Mount Felix, -where the visitors' book was signed.
Mr. and' Mrs. Llewellyn James and their little daughter are visiting Auckwork in connection with tho freezing inwork in connection with the freeing industry, and recently returned from the. Argentine, where ho was overlooking "larVe freezing interests, and also from Port Darwin.
