Sir,—Amon* other things discussed by members of Parliament at present,, it is a wonder someone does not draw attention to the prices of foodstuffs in Wellington.' In. small up-country towns m Canterbury, where groceries, etc., have to be railed forty miles or so, things a.ve chea]>er than here, where ships come in, and there is no transhipping. As an example, bread hero is selling at 10cl. per loaf 9Jkl. in Canterbury. Cheese hero Is. 3d.," there Is. 2d. Sugar, here 17s. (id. fqr 701b. bag, there 16s. Gd. As to wheat, I cannot understand the Government prico for tho New Zealand farmer—ss. lOd.—and yet in Wellington one has to pay 6s. 7d. for Australian. Who' is getting these profits?. Certainly not the producers, in spite of the filet that tho cry is, tax the land, tax the land, and again tax the land! But what about the middleman, or whoever is responsible for these prices P Even fish is 2d. per lb. dearer • here, and why sugar is more J. cannot make out, as surely Wellington is nearer ifco Auckland than, say, Timaru. -I am, etc.,
