SOME NOTED RECIPIENTS
DOMINIONS' LISTS DEFERRED
London, August 24.
Long- lists of tlio first recipients of the Order o£ Companions of Honour "ncl of the various classes of the Order of the British Empire, have teen issued. The wen and women chosen for distinction aro drawn, from every walk of life whose services during the war have won particular notice.
One class of tho Order of the British Empire consista of a medal awarded for the services of men and women engaged in manual and other war work, for acts of great courage and self-sacrifice, high example in initiative, perseverance, skill, r(source, and invention.
An announcement foreshadows that Tecommehdaticvns by fallow-workers for worthy recipients will be considered. It is further announced that the_ Governments of India and the Dominions have agreed that lists of the recipients of the Order of the British Empire shall appear on subsequent dates. The civil service and military and naval awards will similarly be deferred. * The Order of Companion of Honour has been conferred on seventeen porsons of both sexes, headed by Goneral Smuts. The list includes the Marchioness of Lansdowno, Miss Violet MarkhaJn,' Mr. "Wardle, M.P., Hr. Williie, M.P., and Lord Burnham. There are five Dames of tlio Grand Cross of the British Empire, Tieaded by the Queen.
Thirteen Knights of the Grand Cross includo the Duko of Connaught, Lord Emmott, Lord Gladstone, Lord Sydenham and Sir Arthur Pearson.
Five Dames Commander include the Dowager, Marchioness of Dufferih and Mrs. Alfred Lyttelton. Forty-three, Knights Commander of the British Empire comprise administrators and advisers of various' Government bodies. • . . v Seventy-nine Commanders include Mr. Appleton (secretary of the General Federation of Trades Unions) and Mr. Havolock Wilson (secretary of the Seamen's and Firemen's Union). Matrons include leading members of the London Bed Cross Society, and severity Oflicers of the Order include a number of trades -union officials.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Eeuter. NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS HONOURED (Kec. August 2fi, 5.5 p.hi.) London, August 25. The following awards have been made, to New Zealanders-.— Distinguished Service Order.—Major N. W. Thorns, for valuable reconnoitring work under heavy fire. Military Cross.—Lieutenants D. C. Armstrong and E. A. .Winchester, also Captain Marr. (Mesopotamia). Ono New Zealander 'has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.-Eeuter.
