MI?. WILLI Ait LANK, EDITOR, "NEW ZEALAND HERALD."

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, August 26. Mr. William Lane, alitor of the "New 1 Zealand Herald," ono of tho best-known journalists in Australasia, is dead, aged 58. The late Mr. Lane was born at Bristol, England, and at the age of 1.1 emigrated to America, and apprenticed himsolf as a compositor, eventually entering the literary fide of journalism. Ten year 3 later he went to Brisbane, Queensland, whero ho worked on the "Observer," and was associated with Mr. Drako (afterwards Commonwealth Post-master-General) in conducting a weekly paper, "The Boomerang." Ho then proved his adhesion to his own creed by resigning from a lucrative position an<6establishing a now journal on co-opera-tives lines, entitled "Tho Worker," which scored an instant success. Subsequent to tho industrial troubles of 1890-2, lie inaugurated a "New Australia" movement, and wont to Paraguay. Returning to Australia in 1899 ho became editor of tho Sydney "Worker," but soon afterwards resigned on account of a disagreement with what ho regarded a3 the unpatriotic attitude of tho Controlling body. He then came to Auckland, and since then has l>een connected with, the "Herald." Ht> succeeded the lata Mr. W. Si' Douglas as editor in 1913. His special articles und?r the pen-name of "Tohunga". were a feature of the "Herald's" weekly supplement, shoeing a commanding, and flexible stvle, reflecting a virile, personality and a 'wide, keen, yet sympathetic knowledge of humanity. The deceased is survived by Mrs. Lane, five ■ daughters—one of whom is married to Lieutenant M. D. Rowan, now on active service—and one.son. The latter is on his wav to tho iront. Jin elder son. (The late Mr. Alfred Kidd was born at Hounslow Heath, England, in 1851, and arrived in Auckland at the ago of 13 years. After serving on a farm and on the Thames goldiields he returned to Auckland, where for many years he conducted the Commercial Hotel. Ho served on various local bodies and viisi Mayor of Auckland for two years. lie was elected M.H.R. for Auckland City in. 1902, and for Auckland Central m 1905. Later he was defeated for tho latter constituency by Mr. A. E. Glover by a largo majority.]
