APPEALS OP MARIST BROTHERS DECISION POSTPONED The Third Wellington Military Service Board continued ils sessions in Wellington yesterday. Mr. 11. ,1. Boswirk presided, and with him were Messrs. M. J. Mack and A. O'L t.'onsiiline. I'aplain P. Baldwin represented the military Appeals of priests, theological silldents and Marisl Brothers were considered. The case of C. I''. Welsh, D. J. Cody, and M. Jackson, Marisl Brothers. Mr. H. I'. OTeary. who appeared in Hipporl of the appeals, called the appellant Jackson lo givo evidence. Jackson stated that he was the head of the .Marisl Brothers' School at Newtown. The total attendance at his school was -90. There were live Brothers acting as teachers, and the ages, of the boys ranged from eight lo fifteen. At Thorndon. one hundred aud eixtv scholars were taught by three Brothers. There were IKO scholars in Wellington and the average number taught by a Brother was t'oriy-six. The total number of scholars in Xew Zealand was 1950, and Ihe Brothers numbered fortyseven. Ssver.il Brothers were leaching "over sixty scholars in Wellington and Auckland, while authorities upon education put down- forty scholars as a lair
number for one leather. Six of Ihe Brothers were over military age, but the bulk of lliem were under I'orly. I'our iiii.i been medically examined, and only 0110 had passed Ihe test. The chairman said that the only i|iicstion was wiielher the Brothers were essential for teaching. Mr. O'Leary said that Ihe Slate school slall's wero being depleted, and it was questionable whether the teachers left could deal with any morn scholars. No teacher out of Orders could be obtained lo do their work at less than .£5 per week. Kiordan, theological student, and recommended that appellant be drafted lo Ihe medical corps. Tito ease of John M'l.ean Cochrane, bank manager. Paeroa. was referred lo the first .Auckland Board.
