At last. Tuesday's meeting of the board, Mr. J. Steer stated that during tho first six months of tho present, year revenue hafl fallon off to the extent of £6000, due to the reduction in revenue-producing traffic. There had been a very serious falling of! in the quantity of coal from the Grey Valley, and though tho State mines made up the traffic there was a great, loss of revenuo to tho board. Tho Brunncr railway revenue for 1916 had totalled £24,876, but for tho term from January to June, 1917 (24 weeks), the total was only £5484. The rovenue estimated for tho year on the same basis was £11,908, leaving a dcflcienoy of £12,968. A harbour improvements rate of 6 per cent, on 500,000 tons, which would include all pood", coal, and. timber, would produce £12,500. Ho gavo notice to niovo that the Government should be asked to sanction a harbour improvement rate of 6d. per ton. and that berthage charges should bo increased at tho same rate.
