RUSSIA SUSPECTS TEUTONIC INFLUENCE
"NOT ACCEPTABLE"

Tho Russian Embassy liu6 issued the following statement:—"The Russian Government has not yet formulated an answer to the peace proposal of the Vatican, but there is a feeling in Russia 'that the proposal was made with some inspiration from' tho Central Powers. It is considered in Russia that in its very basis the Vatican's proposal is inconsistent with the democratic aims of the Russian people in this war, and is not acceptable- from that point of view.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE VATICAN'S INCONSISTENCY. (Rec. [August 21, B.ij p.m.) Washington, August 20. The Russian Embassy's statement adds: "The inconsistency of the Vatican's proposals consists in a recognition of the rights of Serbia and Belgium to independence, while leaving to tho Peaco Conference the disposition of Alsace and Lorraine, the Jungo-Slavs, and such other nationalities as desire autonomy or independence. The Vatican's proposal tluis ignores the rights of each nationality to determine its own destiny which is the most vital principle proclaimed by the New Russia."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

THE STOCKHOLM CONFERENCE MIXERS' FEDERATION REVERSE DECISION TO ATTEND., London, August 20. At a private conference of tho Miners' Federation a small majority reversed the decision, to send delegates to the Stockholm Conference, and recommended the adjournment of the discussion of the peace memorandum of the Party Executive until the affiliated bodies have had an opportunity of considering it.-'-Aua.-N.Z. GERMAN TRICKERY SWAYS THE VOTING. (Rec. August 21, 7.15 p.m.) London, August 20. The Miners' Federation vote was the result of Mr. Gerard's revelation that Herr von Bet'hmann-Hollweg iiad informed him that it was Germany's intention to retain tlio forts of Namur and Liege, with. a large army, and that Belgium would not be allowed to have its own army—Aus.'-N.Z. Cable Assn. LABOUR TURNING AGAINST STOCKHOLM IDEA. (Rec. August 21, 7.15 p.m.) , London, August 20. A oonfcrenco of trade unions, convened by the Sailors' and Firemen's Union, has urged tho Parliamentary Committee of the Trade Union Congress to take a referendum on tho subject o£ tho Stockholm Conference.
