'■ANNUAL MEETING. • The eighth aunuol meeE7m>- of tho JS'ew Zealand. Society- of Accountants was held last cvoning in tho Accountants' Chambers, Johnston Street. Tho president, ~lr. J. S. Earton,' was .in the chair. The councillors' present were Messrs. Peter Barr,-James.-Brown, Walter Green (Dunedin),. W. E. Best, 'James -Moi'rison (Christchurch), H.- A; Gold (Wellington), H. C. Tewsley, W.H..Hemingway, G. AV. Hutchison (Auckland), Reginald Davis (Palmerston North), %':J> Harvey (iilenheira), J. E. Hutohineon (Timaru), E. C. Leary (Invercargill),- William M'Culloch (Napier), and C." G\' Piesse' (Gisborne). There was a fair attendance of members. The report of tho council for the year ended June 30,'1917, showed', that at tho commencement of tho.year the-member-ship stood at 1835, and. 79 were atbnitted (hiring the .-year, niakingTtho total ISO-1, but of this number 41 died, of whom oig'ht died on active service. Thenworo 12 resignations, and the membership of 811 lapsed on account of non-payment of subscription, making ri total of 114, ai;d reducing the membership to 1790, a decrease of 35 for tho year. Altogether 113 members o ( f tho .society : bad responded to tho Empire's civil. The society's totafi contributions to war funds now amounts to .£1275. In moving'the. adoption of tho report and' accounts, the president referred feelingly to tho death of Mr. Walter Buiherf urd, of PalmoTston North, whose loss was seriously felt by tho. council. He also referred Ijriefly to tfio activities of the society and what has been accomplished. With respect to the future, when the war had ended,'. ho said- that State and municipal enterprises.would expand, and in this the accountants could render great public service. He also referred to the increase'-of taxation, national organisation and labour unrest, in all directions of which the accountants were capable of doing good work in the public interest. ■ - The following retiring members were re-elected to the council :—Messrs. R. A. Gold (Wellington), Peter Barr (Dunedin), It. Davis (Palmerstbn North), W. H. Hem. ingway (Auckland), E. C. Leary (InverMirgill), W. M'Cullocb. (Napier), and Mr. James Morrison was elected for Christcbnrch district. Messrs. E. R. M. Dyniock and James Kcllow were appointed auditors, and their remuneration was (i.ted at twenty guineas each.
