THE CATHEDRAL
Sir,—"Practical" now states that the memorial homo which ho thinks should be erected instead of an Anglican cathedral should bo built by money subscribed by the general public, and not by Anglicans alone. While thanking "Practical for his courteous explanation, I must point out that such a homo -would not be tat Anglican memorial at all; but it would still be n charitable institution, and its inmates would be dependent upon the generosity of a section of the community, that i<3, upon rhose who might feel inclined to contribute to the building and maintenance of the home. It would probably necessitate continual appeals to the public for money to_ keep the institution going. Its inmates would certainly not be the "honoured guests of tho State." I am sure that "Practical s idea is a mistaken one. I am convinced that tho principle laid down by Mr. M'Oallitm, M.l\, Jβ. the right one-that it is the duty of tho State to make not only just, but generous, provision for our disabled soldiers and their- dependants; not of charity, but by way of fair and honest recompense for the highest of all services to tho State. "Practical" further remarks that every shilling wo have must bo spent on winning tho war, helping tho wounded and tick, and caring for the depondants of our soldiers. The winning of the war must, of course, bo tlio supreme consideration until the war is won; but as soon tis tho war -s over it will be our duty to erect eome worthy memorial to our brave dead, and to provide work for tho many thousands of men who will come back. The Government intend to spend a lot of money in order that these men may bo usefully employed until normal peaco conditions .have been fully restored. Tho Government will no doubt bo glad of the co-operation of local bodies and private institutions in this matter. Such being the case it would certainly be in tho public interest-! if a start'could be made with the actual building of the cathedral as soon as possible after tho restoration of peace.—l am, CtC " LAYMAN.
