. A,WORKERS' PARADISE. " If the Northern Territory is unpopulated, it should not be because of the low wages ruling there '(atatee a Melbourne paper). Recently Mr. Justice Powers took evidence there in connection with several industrial disputes, and he discovered that, in the financial year just ended, 1193 men and boys earned between them or just under £i a week a head.
Details of Sir. Justice Powells awards have not yet t>6611 published, but a fewfigures as to the ruling rates before the Court visited the Territory give an idea of -what the workers have been earning. In the Government hotels, tho wages fixed by agremeent are. as follow:—First cook, £a a week and fonnd; second cook, J!3 10s. and found; waitresses, i>2 10s. and found; first barman. .£3 15s. and,found; second barman, .£3 10s. and found; general useful, £2 15e. and found.
Under other agreement?, increases over whioli were urged before Mr. Justice Powers, the following rates wero fixed:— UnsKilkd labourers, 14s. a day of eight hours; wharf labourers, £1 a day: plasterers and plumbers, 189. a day. Wharf labourers received is. an hour overtime, ss. an hour if they worked on Sundays, and 6s. an hour if they worked on a. holiday. The only particulars of any decision by Mr. Justice. Powers which have yet come to hand relate to litters, blacksmiths, and carpenters. In their case the award provides as follows:—Fitters, electriciane, etc., 2s. sd. an hour; blacksmiths, 2s.'7id.j carpenters, 2s. Id. The following are the rates of pay claimed by station hands in the Territory :—Sub-managers, .£6 per week of 47 hours; head stockmen, dGS; stookmen, £i 10s.; boundary riders, J24 55.; cooks, X 5 per week of seven days; teamsters on road, -£6 per week of 47 hours; teamsters on station, £S 10s. per week of 47 hours; fencers, £b 10s, per week of 44 hours; well sinkers, £6; blacksmiths, =C 6; plumbers, £6; horse breakers, i! 6; eaddlers, ,£5 10s.;' carpenters, 10s.; bookkeepers. £o 10s.
