FRANCE'S DAY IN SYDNEY

A large number <-f women, with a' sprinkling of men, assembled in tho Tivoli Theatre, Syduey, ,when, at Uio request of Mr. Neville Maynian, organs iser of France's Day, the Acting-Premier (the lion. George Fuller, M.L.A.) handed over to Madam Play-oust, president of the French-Australian League, a cheque for .£IOO,OOO, the first instalment of France's Day collection. Before the presentation a musical programme arranged by Mr. Stanley Warwick was contributed by Miss Hose Alba and Mr. Hoy Allen, Mr. Hoogstoel and Mr. Frank Hutcheus. Speeches were made by Mr. Neville Mayinan and Mdlle. Soubeiran, touching on the generous response of the people of New South Wales on France's Day. Mdlle. Soubeiran announced. that tho French-Australian League intended sending the money to France, where a chosen committee wotdd see that it was distributed for the purpose it was' collected. She would like to eee also a sum of money spent on the equipment of beds in ft French hospital, each bed to bear the name of a town in New South Wales. ■ Mr. Fuller complimented Miss Ada Eeeve, who was doing so much for the Australian soldiers in London. Mr. Shard proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. H. D. M'lntosh. who had throughout the campaign shown so much kindness to the French people. Misa Ada Eeove, in responding, said that Mr. Hugh D. M'lntosh regretted that he was not able to lie present, but had .asked her to eay how proud and pleased he was at tho response of tho New South Wales people for their French Allies. ■ Miss lleeve referred to Mr. M'lniosh's generosity v-hcrever patriotic functions were concerned.
