IMPERIAL TRADE AND SEA TRAFFIC
QUESTION IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS MATTERS OF IMPERIAL NECESSITY , (Hec. August 19, 5.5 p.m.) T London, August 17. Lord D Abernon asked what measures tho Government contemplated to provide for the safe, economic, and rapid 'sea communication within tho Empire after tho war; also, what was proposed to be done with regard to Imperial harbour improvements. Earl Curzon admitted that the question was of capital importance. The measures which Lord D'Abernon had indicated were en Imperial necessity, and would become a greater necessity after the war. They would give a great impetus to Imperial trade, increasing the strength and cohesion of the Empire. He (Earl Curzon) hoped that some of the recommendations of the Dominions Koyal Commission would be adopted, but they oould not be tackled in war time owing to the shortage of labour aud other circumstances. These questions would also require careful consideration by all the Government Departments herb and in the Dominions. He assured the House that the question wonld bo kept in mind and taken up in its Imperial aspects as .soon as possible.—Aus.-lv.Z. Cable Assn.
