GRAND NATIONAL MEETING

feURDLES WON BY SLEIGHT OF HAND Master strowan wins the steeplechase KING STAR'S WINTER CUP (B.v Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, August 17. The Canterbury Jockey OJub's Grand National Meeting opened in fine weather, but a cold wind was blowing. The attendance was large. The totalisator handled £51,327, as against £46,366 last year. Handsome Boy, who is an inmate of tho Bame stable as Kaupokonui, was tho only withdrawal from tho Hunt Cup. The latter was a better favourite than Burgess, this pair being tho only ones backed with any spirit. At. tho start Eanza, as usual, led off at a fast pace ; but he was chancing his fences, and tho second of tho stand double brought him down. This'left Kaupokonui in front, arid though Wellwood ran to him ftvo furlongs from home tho favourite came away and won nicely. Golden Butterfly was a poor third, and Burgess waß tho only other to finish, H After the success of Kaupokonui, it was ionly to be expected that San Sebastian would have a lot of supporters in the Trial Hurdles, and the Chokehore cast-off was a good favourite. He ran an honest enough race, but tho weight heat him at the finish, and ho could only get fourth. Dionysius, after being badly placed in the first mile and a quarter, then came fast, and in a punishing finish got up and beat Compulsion. Arthur George lost his rider, and Salathiel and Don Francisco ran off. The National Hurdles was a disappointing race, only five of tho starters completing the course. Sleight of Hand was a good favourite, and he soon pulled to the front, and led the whole way. His jumping at some of the fences was extraordinary, and caused, the onlookers to gasp with astonishment. At tho fence, opposite" the stand Flying Camp fell, and Art and Leonta came down over him. Eewi Poto's bride oamo off, and he was pulled up. Down the back the favourite had a good lead, and never looked liko getting beaten. Sir Solo was in second place from Cutts's, and finished there. Sir Fisher was third, and then came Bon Reve and Te Onga. Marconi fell two fences from home. None of tho riders wero injured. The winner had the softest victory of recent .years, and there. is little doubt that had the others stood up the result would have been the same. Tho Avonbead Handicap waß contested by a big. field. The Porlrua-trained Eajput was a good favourite, and ho led into the straight from Achilleus and Epworth, hut then several others joined in. Euripos came fast on the "outside, and, stalling off : a good run by Minesweeper, he won by half: a length. Epworth just beat Eed Cent, and then came Eewanga. J Tho Steeplechase was one of the finest jumping events, ever seen at Eiccarton, and .resulted in a very popular win for Mr. F. S. Ea6ton's Master Strowan. Merry

I Lad, St. Elmti, and Orib were fancied in •that order, and for two miles and a huif tho wholo of the starters fenced perfectly. Diavolo was leading The Browcr and KirKby. with Orib, pulling hard. next. Tho order was tho sauio till the second round, when Merry Lad. who had been stifling lua fences, came down at Outts'6. A mile from homo the field bunched and took tho next three fences in a cluster. Then St. Elmn shot out and looked a winner till Maßter Strowan got to him at the last fence, and in the ran homo beat him comfortably. Orib was third, and then came Nita and Braeburn. Kirkby was tailed off, and Saudy Paul pulled up. The winner scored on his merits, and was under a pull nearly all the way. The manner in which ho left St. Elmn after landing over tho last fenco was remarkable, and it looked a» it it would have taken a lot of weight to have brought him back to tho field. Taulra was backed down to a very short price in the Enflold Steeples, but ho failed to run better than third. Tho winner turned up in tho seventeen-year-old Stone Cinger, who fenced well, and had too much pace for Paremata and Tauira, who were tho only others to finish. Coalition fell at the first fence.

Tho whole of the acceptors went to the post for tho Winter Cup. Parisian Diamond was tho absolute favourite, with Ktljoy and Fiery Cross bracketed next, and Tip Up and Bramblctyo following. At the start Oardrona set a fast pace, and followed by George, Tip Up, Miss do Val, and the favourite, he led into the straight. Here the favourite took charge, and looked to bo winning easily, but over the last bit he tired, and King Star and Brambletye both mado runs at him. He Bhook"T>fl tho mare, but the light-weight, well handled by W. Bell, stuck to his task and got up Tn time to win by a head. Brambletye was a neck away third, and then came Sir Agnes, Kiltan, and Tip Up In that order. No excuses can be oflered for the defeat of the'favourite, who was in a good position early, and Tapp got the best out of him.

For tho concluding ovent Hythread, Ascalaphns, and Thames wore evenly backed, while tho hitherto disappointing Killard also had plenty of supporters. ABcalaphus led off and at one stage had a break of ten lengths from Thames. Inside the distance, Hythread and Killard joined Ascalaphns, and the two dashed over the line together. Killard got the vordict from Asmtlaphus, with Hythread in third place.
