AGE LIMIT OF RECRUITS
* ANOTHER PROTEST AGAINST . DEDUCTION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Westport, August IG. At a mooting to-night of the Bullet Branch of tho Second Division Leagua t'ho following resolution, was passed:— "(1) That members of tho Bullcr Second Division League desiro to voice their omphatic protest against tho rumoured action of tho Government to call up children of nineteen years to fight tho Umpire's battles, instead of facing the position squarely and malting; adequate provisions by equitable taxation to enable Second Division men to tako their place among the mon of tho Empire with the feeling that politicians 6afe at homo in New Zealand have done their duty in providing for the wives and children left behind. (2). That the Government nso the power it possesses to ascertain tho source of the rumours of its alleged intention and take to task the persons responsible for such rumours. (3) That this meeting of the Second Division Leaguo regrets the failure of the Government to carry out tho promise made to the deputation from tho Second Division Leaguo Conference in reference to arranging for the medical examination of the Second Division men, and requests tho Government immediately to make the necessary arrangements and carry out its promise." One speaker took Strong exception to the way in -which men -were evading mill- >. tary service by gotting work at mines, and thought the companies should acquaint the Defence Minister of the position. Too great power, he thought, was given to a few men to say that certain men ■were essential to an industry.
