EMPLOYMENT OF SOLDIERS
RAILWAYS AtfD AGE LIMIT. A proposal was made to the Minister of Railways by Mr. W. A. Veitcli, M.P., that the Railway Regulations should be amended in order to provide that honourably discharged soldiers might be employed by the Department irrespective of age limits. The Hon. W. H. Herries (Minister of Railways) replied: The existing regulations of the Railway Department provide for tho permanent employment of men up to 35 years of ago, while there is no limit as to the age at vliich applicants for temporary employment may be engaged.' The Department is exercising every latitude in dealing with applications from returned soldiers for tmployment. It has not, up to the present, been foumd necessary- to -consider the alteration of the Depaijtment's regulations. Should it, however, be deemed necessary at a later date to do so the matter will bo reconsidered.
