CITY'S MILK SUPPLY

POWERS' OF MUNICIPALITIES. Tho milk suipply difficulty in the City of Wellington was reierred io in tlio House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Payne said that some little time ago when tho Wellington Loam wished to establish a dairy farm in connection with tho Hospital, in order to ensure a supply of pure milk they were ■prevented by the Government from c;:irying out this project. Ho asked whether the Minister of Internal Affairs would make provision for the Hospital Board or the municipality acquiring and nuiuing a farm for milk supply purposes. Mr. Russell: I am not aware c.t the Hospital Board having made any such proposal to the Department, and if any proposal of this kind is made it will ceive most careful consideration. With regard to the other propose-that or enabling municipalities to establish a -uilk farm for itseli-if any request is 111 ado from any ■municipality lor power to do this, the matter will receive immediate consideration. I will have no to putting this provision into the UilL which is being prepared for extending the powers of municipalities., bo ar as this City of Wellington is concerned, m> own opinion is that the only way a sup ; ply of pure milk can be guaranteed w> Re bv the State owning its farm* and «eUing milk from ils own estate.

Referring to the suggestion I hat the old Te Aro railway station might be used as a tcraporarv milk clearing-house, a member of the Milk Vendors' Association stated Inst evening that the as * o did not consider the lo Aro station a suitable place, and, further, here was no plant or appliances there. It ..rgued that a temporary clearing-house would not be a safeguard to the mill; vendor, and also that it. would only cause delny .in deliveries if the council intended to put the whole of the. milk through it.
