THE LION'S CUBS

THEIR LOYALTY TO THE FLAG COLONIAL SECRETARY'S TRIBUTE (Bee. August 15, 6.30 p.m.) London, August 14. In tne House of Commons, speaking on the Colonial Office vote, Mr. Ion" (Colonial Secretary) paid a. tribute to the jiart played by tho Dominions in tho war. Ho said: "Their soldiers have shown themselves worthy of the best traditions of the British Army." 110 was constantly receiving proofs of tho admiration of the nativo races for- Britain, and their loyalty to tlio King. Ho read messages from British East Africa and tho Indian Association at Zanzibar, and placed emphasis on the point that this loyalty and trusl_ in Britain Should bo encoiii'aged and justified by our future treatment of tho natives.Mr. Long mentioned that conscription had been enforced in British Mast Africa, Uganda, Ceylon, the Straits Settlements, Malay States, and was being considered elsewhere. Hong Kong had found it unnecessary, bocaiwo every white man had already volunteered. The Crown Colonies had fully done their duty. Referring to the suggestion that the c-.'.mpaigr. in tierman East Africa ought to be brought more rapidly to a conclusion, the speaker enlarged upon the stupendous physical difficulties that had to bo overcome.

The Imperial Conference,

The ovftMcius representatives at the conference, he added, had frequently expressed the hope that the resolutions that had been passed would not he pigeonholed. He had assured them Uiat he would do his best to ensure that effect would bo given to them as early us possible. Inferring to the question of Imperial •preference, ho 6aid that obviously any policy of preference must bo framed to meet the viows of the Allies. The subject demanded continued consideration. Tho appointment by tho Prime Minister of a conferenco to report uipon' tho best methods and' machinery by which effect could"bo given to tho resolutions of the Imperial Conference was evidenco of the Government's intention to take all the steps it could to give effcct thereto. Ho (Mv. Long) believed that tho result of the conference would strengthen the prosecution of tho war and help to take some steps after the war to reap the lull advantage of tho lessons learned to make the Empire more strong and powerful than before the war. Every overseas Minister showed a strong desire to promote the interests of the Empire, what they really desired was that ho should realise strongly their feeling, and that it did not originate in a desire for increased territory or any question of that kind. Their desire was that after the war there should be permanent peace in (no world and security for the Empire. The kiiowledgo of the past efforts of the Dominions and the experience gained at the Tinporutl War Conference showed that* the wholf Kninii*.' *'as one. and was prepared iwe iN Vsoiin-n* !•' make a enmbuiwl .-(V.trl (•> serine u final i*»d complete vielory,—Renter,
