Cable Assn.-Eeuter. WELLINGTON CORPORAL'S GALLANT EXPLOIT (Special Dispatch from tho Official New Zealand War Correspondent.) London, August 14. • In all tho vecont fighting in which the New Zealanders took part there was nothing liner than tho splendid heroism and leadership of a Wellington, corporal. Specially detailed to attack and capture an enemy machine-gun position in an isolated estaminct, ho led his men forward only to come unexpectedly upon another gun that was sending out a continuous stream of bullets and holding up the advance on tho left. He immediately attacked this position, killed several of the gun crew, and put tho rest to flight. After this adventure he was able to get only three of his men together, and with theso three ho proceeded to gain his ultimate objective. Observing that a frontal attack would mean destruction to his littlo band, ho led tho party through some thistles and attacked from the rear. As soon as they wore close enough, tho intrepid quartet threw bombs at tho crow and rushed upon the Germans, killing four, and putting tho rest to flight, and capturing tho gun and the position. Leaving two men behind to romovo tho gun, the corporal took tho remaining man with him and advanced on a reconnoitring expedition os far as out barrage would permit. He brought back valuablo information. Throughout the whole of these operations enemy sheila wero pounding into tho position, together with much machine-gun and riflo fire.
