Class is not so well represented iu the two big jumping events as in previous years, but there is still engaged tho material for' good contests. Hythread, who has beeq allowed to drop out of tho Winter Cup, will take his place in tho Sumner Handicap, run over a milo course. Tho Hyraettus gelding has previously demonstrated his ability to go to the distance as he was successful in the "Winter Handicap, one mile and a Quarter at the Hawke's Boy Meeting. There arc twenty-nine horses left in the Winter Oup, and probably this number will go to the post. The defections are Marc Antony, Gold Painting, Hythread, Black Ada, and Alteration. Spectual broke a- blood-vessel when working at Wingatui last week, and he will not fulfil his engagements at tho Grand National Meeting. Several horses figure in each of the hack flat events, to be run at Riccarton on Thursday, but as a whole the payments are satisfactory. Tho whole of the acceptors for the Grand National Hurdles and 'Steeplechase have made the final payment-, with one exception. This is Orib, who has been allowed to drop out of the Hurdles, but retains his place in tho Steeplechase field. It looks as if the owners of Wa.imai forfeited a good chance of winning tho Grand National Steeplechase for the second time when they'sent the Spalpeen gelding after high honours in Melbourne. Had he been kept here .ho would have been ccrtain to seo a short prioc in Thursday's race. A lot of interest was taken in tho annual football match between teams of North and South Island jockeys, which ended in a victory for the latter by 12 points to 9. Mr. C. O'Connor has been appointed starter to tho Wairarapa Racing Club. After doing a gallop at Eiccarton on Saturday morning, Miss Sation was sore, and sho can hardly be at her best for tho Grhnd National. Meeting. : There is stili considerable doubt as to which race St. Elmn will start in on Thursday. The fact that he was schooled over big fences- on Saturday has caused many to think that he will be a runner in the Steeplechase.
