The European winter is again fast approaching, and tho appeal is therefore boinp mud" again by tho British and Foreign Sailors' Society to tho public of this Dominion. The ladies of tho Women's Christian Tcnipcranco Union havo taken vp tho matter in earnest. it. was wainly through tho agency of theso ladies that, such a large consignment t-f (ho required garments was sent last icar. Tlio British and Forcjgu Sailors' Society, London, arc asking for more underclothing than ever this year, for, added to tho requirements of tho minesweeper?, aro tho increasing demands made on tho society lo supply tho urgent need? of torpedoed crews of our merchant fillip?. The members of tho Ranfurly Club, Masterton (a woman's club), have subscribed an amount of J255, which they havo forwarded to Dr. Agnes Bennett for her work among tho Serbians. They havo asked Dr. Bennett to uso tho money as sho thinks best. The idea of assisting this hospital was suggested by Miss Bright and Mrs. Norman Beetliain.

VIOLET DAY RESULTS SUM OF J;T?00 TO BE CABLED HOME. A liiectiug of tho Violet Day General Committee wus held in tho gymnasium of the Sydney Street 'Soldiers' Club yesterday afternoon. Tho Mayoress, Mrs. J. P. Luke, presided. A statement of accounts in connection with the recent Violet Day effort was presented by the honorary secretary, Mrs. Firth, who reported that as a result of the day the sum of .£1770, with one or two small sums yet to come in was taken. The expenses approximated .£3O. As it was necessary to decide in what name tho money should bo sent to England. tho motion was brought forward that "it be sent from a Citizens' Viol.-t Day effort in Wellington, New Zealand, for comforts for New Zealand sick and wounded soldiers." The motion was carried, and it was decided that tho sum of .£I7OO be cabled at once to England for that purpose. Tho remaining amount of .£7O odd will he kept lo meet expenses. Mrs. Firth announced that a brooch was given to tho commercial travellers by a contributor which brought .£3O to the fund. A. wreath to tho honour of tho Into Mr. W. Doughty brought 100 guineas, and a brooch and pendant sent by post from Mrs. Corrm^bain, Street," was sold at tho Opera JTbnsc, and brought in somo pounds.
